Replace A U Joint

Slide or tap the driveshaft onto the other yolk until the u-joint is completed seated into the other yolk. Remove the black tape from the bearing caps. Place the u-connectors over the bearing caps and onto the drive shaft yolk. Then screw the four bolts back in through the u-connectors and into the driveshaft yolk. These bodkin bearings grant the u-joint caps to turn freely while the manage shaft is turning. Once a u-joint wears absent or breaks, it can engender the ride shaft to vibrate vigorously and element the drive shaft to tear. Always see your vehivle's u-joints for wear and looseness on a general rationale.

Instructions

1. Arena the vehicle on a all the more surface and turn the engine off. Locate the emergency brake.

2. Jack up the rear of the car and berth the jack stands in front of Everyone rear tire. There is generally designated areas on the frame rails on both sides of the vehicle for the jack stands. If not, place the jack stands underneath the rear axle. Lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and inspect to make sure that the vehicle is secure.

3. Crawl under the side of the car and locate the drive shaft. The driveshaft is the shaft that is attached to the rear-end differential and the transmission. The driveshaft relays the rotation from one end to the other. There are u-joints located inside each end of the drive shaft yolks. Mark each yolk directly across from each other with white chalk. This is done so you can reinstall the driveshaft to the yolk the exact same way it came off.

4. Remove the four bolts that are holding the drive shaft yolk connectors together with a ratchet, ratchet extension and a socket. Once the bolts are removed, remove the u-clamps that the bolts were running through.

5. Tap the end of the drive shaft yolk that is attached to the spindle with a rubber mallet hammer. This will allow the driveshaft to slide back on the spindle and unconnect from the other yolk. Lower the driveshaft to the ground.

6. Tap the u-joint that's inside of the drive shaft yolk with the rubber mallet hammer until it loosens. Finish removing the u-joint with your hands.

7. Tape the four bearing caps on the new u-joint with black electrical tape to keep the caps from falling off during installation. Then set the u-joint inside of the driveshaft yolk.

8. Raise the driveshaft up and attach the driveshaft yolk to the other yolk with the white chalk mark, matching up with the other chalk mark.

Most cars and trucks come equipped with u-joints in the driveshaft. U-joints connect the driveshaft yolks well-balanced. U-joints hold indicator bearing plentiful caps on the location of Everyone u-joint arm.

9. Tighten the four bolts down very tight with the ratchet and socket. These bolts need to be extremely tight because they are not only holding the u-joint in place but they are also holding the driveshaft together.

10. Jack the vehicle up and remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle to the ground. Take the vehicle for a test drive. Listen for any vibrations or noises coming from the driveshaft area. Park the vehicle and turn the engine off. Reach under the vehicle and shake the driveshaft near the new u-joint. There should be no slack at all in the driveshaft yolk.
