Antilock Brake Problems

Anti-Lock Brake Problems

Anti-lock brake systems (ABS) prevent wheels from locking during terror stops or in slippery driving conditions. The manner electronically monitors indivisible wheel speed; when it senses a wheel is about to lock up, it releases that wheel's brake. When the system has problems, it can be costly to repair. Knowing what causes the problems can help keep repair bills under control.

Function and Modes of Operation

The ABS functions in four modes during brake operation: monitor, hold/isolate, release/dump, and reapply.

They are magnetic inductors that generate an AC signal or, in the case of vehicles with electronic brake proportioning systems, a DC wave. The signal strength and frequency increases or decreases according to wheel speed. Early speed sensors were located in the differential; later systems are in the axle or hub bearing. The output devices are known as solenoid valves.

It calculates that the wheel is about to lock up and energizes the isolation solenoid to prevent additional brake pressure from being applied.

To regain control, the ABS de-energizes the isolation solenoid and energizes the release/dump solenoid, allowing the wheel to spin and regain traction. The pressurized brake fluid is routed and stored in an accumulator where it stays until it is released back into the system.

In reapply mode, the stored brake fluid is pressurized and reapplied to the brakes to continue to slow the vehicle.

This sequence of modes is repeated until normal brake function is regained. The ABS in late-model vehicles can cycle more than 15 times a second.

ABS Parts

The input devices are called wheel speed sensors. In monitor mode, the ABS is monitoring and comparing the wheel speed sensors. If there is no brake pedal input or wheel lock, this is the normal mode of operation. In hold/isolate mode, the system has sensed one or more wheels drop to a speed slower than the others.

The valves and their coils are located in the modulator valve assembly. The valves open when a coil is energized and a magnetic field builds around it. The iron stem of the valve moves to center itself in the magnetic field, which opens the valve.

The electronic brake control module (ECBM) is the computer that calculates wheel speed according to sensor input and then energizes the appropriate solenoid valve to control the mode.

Common Problems

The most common causes of ABS failure involve the wheel speed sensors. The No. 1 cause of an ABS light activating is a contaminated wheel speed sensor. Since the sensor is magnetic, it attracts metal particles in the brake pads. These particles stick to the sensor and dampen the signal. Cleaning the sensor usually restores proper function. If the metal buildup is severe, the particles can wedge between the sensor and its tone ring and crack the sensor. When this occurs, water and grit quickly deteriorate the wiring and chip in the sensor and destroy it.

Another common cause of ABS failure is corrosion in the modulator valve assembly. This is caused by a failure to change the brake fluid. As the fluid absorbs moisture to the point of saturation, the water attacks the metal components in the valve assembly, causing the valves to stick open or closed.

Other Concerns

Problems related to premature lockup or no ABS action can be traced to incorrect wheel diameter or mismatched wheel diameter. The trend of replacing factory wheels and tires with larger diameter wheels can cause problems with not only ABS but with the speedometer and other systems.

There are two remedies. The first is to use tires with the correct outside diameter. As long as the tire is the right diameter, the wheel can be whatever diameter you wish. The second remedy is to recalibrate the vehicle's computer to compensate for the diameter change. Cars and trucks using the CAN (controller area network) computer protocol have this function.

Conclusions

Precautions when selecting tires and proper maintenance of the system will prevent most ABS problems. Change your brake fluid as directed in your owner's manual or have an authorized service center do it for you.

Test drive the vehicle at slow to moderate speeds to ensure that the maintenance was performed in the correct manner.

Replace Front Brakes Inside A Nissan Altima

The Nissan Altima is equipped with disc-type front brakes. The brake functions by using friction created by two brake pads urgent against a Hand-bill brake rotor. In most cases, maintaining the front brakes is a clean incident of replacing the pads. But, it may be chief to and pennies the rotor and the caliper. Provided you duty to transform the complete front brake meeting, allot aside at least two hours to plenary the task. You can modify both sets of front pads in approximately an time.

Instructions

Pad Replacement

1. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels. Up thrust the front of the motorcar with a jack and block both sides with a jack stand. Remove the lug nuts with a lug wrench and revenue off both wheels.

2. Disinfected the brake meeting with brake cleaner. Compass a drip pan below the meeting to capture the dripping cleaner.

3. Practice a yoke of pliers to remove the lower sliding pin bolt from the caliper. Pull the bolt away from the back of the caliper.

4. Rotate the caliper away of the torque member and off the rotor. Secure it to the van's thing with a abundance of wire.

5. Custom your thumb to lift the pad retainer spring off the pad. Remove the pad, shim and shim insert, noting their placement.

6. Coat the back of the au courant pad and the back of the shim with Molykote AS-880N grease or its equivalent. Create the pad, shim and shim involve, and compass them into the torque member. Moderate the retainer spring.

7. Rotate the caliper back down into position. End a ample C-clamp to press the piston back into the caliper to assemble extent for it to fit over the fashionable pads in that the distinct pads are thicker than the gray-haired ones.

Repeat the pumping and bleeding procedure until no air escapes when you open the valve. Tighten the valve to 73 ft.-lbs. of torque. Recheck the fluid level in the master cylinder and add brake fluid if necessary.

Starter Relay Work

Many hybrid impel systems practice a combination starter, alternator and coerce Engine.

Conforming most other motorized or all-powerful electric devices on your motorcar, the starter doesn't attract its ability directly from the switch used to trigger it. Instead, the ignition switch triggers a Category of secondary switch, familiar as a relay or -- in the condition of a starter -- the solenoid.

Starting System Basics

When you turn the ignition interpretation on your automobile, the solution closes a opening between the fine wire on your battery and a skilled terminal on the starter solenoid, When the course closes on the solenoid, a switch inside of the solenoid closes and closes another progression that links the battery and the electric Engine on your starter. Hypothetically, you could condign flow a wire directly from the battery to the ignition switch and then to the Engine, however that would thirst for a abundance of genuine heavy-gauge wire and a heavy-duty switch.

How a Solenoid Works

When electrical ongoing from the switch enters the solenoid, it energizes a immature electromagnet inside the solenoid. This electromagnet pulls on an metal arm attached to the battery's definite terminal against a metal plate attached to the starter terminal. In this journey, the starter solenoid mimics the behaviour of the ignition switch; you can anticipate of the starter solenoid as a moment ignition switch that sits in borderline between the battery and the starter.

Divorced vs Integrated

Voguish starters generally cause a starter solenoid integrated into the object of the starter itself, while older cars typically employment a divorced solenoid mounted on the rotate fit or firewall. This circumvents the whole on-off-on cycle, possibly allowing a driver to begin the car when he might otherwise end up stranded. This may be technically possible with some integrated solenoids, but the integrated solenoid is by nature harder to receive to.

The main starter circuit closing draws a great deal of power from the battery, which temporarily deprives the ignition switch of the amperage that it needs to trigger the solenoid. When the main circuit opens, power returns to the electromagnet, the circuit closes with a sharp click and the cycle starts over again. In this scenario, divorced solenoids have a slight advantage over integrated solenoids, since a driver can simply jump the exposed battery and starter terminals on the solenoid with a screwdriver. The integrated solenoid and starter packet is cheaper to build and install because it reduced the number of connections in the electrical system and the machine processes necessary to install a separate solenoid mechanism in the engine bay. To locate your starter solenoid -- be it divorced or integrated -- simply follow the thick, red cable connected to your positive battery terminal.

Failure and Troubleshooting

A clicking starter solenoid usually indicates low battery power.

Replace Ford Driveline Ujoints

Reinstall the driveshaft in the vehicle by reversing Step 2. Remove the drain pain from under the vehicle. Raise the rear of the vehicle and slide the jack stands out from underneath. Lower the vehicle and remove the wheel chocks.

The Ford Engine Firm has been manufacturing rear wheel-drive vehicles for many senescence, including F-Series trucks, Mustangs, Thunderbirds and Coronet Victorias. Convert your Ford's worn absent U-joints before they fail and dispensation you stranded.

Instructions

1. Compass rotate chocks on both sides of the front tires. Up thrust the rear of your vehicle with a floor jack. Slide jack stands under each side of the axle housing near the shock absorber mounting brackets. Lower the floor jack so that the vehicle rests on the jack stands and the rear wheels are off the ground.

2. Crawl under the vehicle at the rear. Place a drain pan under the front end of the driveshaft where it attaches to the transmission. Locate the U-bolt that secures the rear of the driveshaft to the rear axle yoke. Remove the two nuts from the U-bolt with a socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet wrench. Slide the U-bolt out of its mounting holes and set it aside. Lower the rear of the driveshaft and slide it out of the transmission tailshaft and towards the rear of the vehicle. Remove the driveshaft from under the vehicle and place it on a work bench. A minimal amount of transmission fluid may leak from the transmission tailshaft when the driveshaft is removed.

3. Locate the U-joints which are pressed into the yokes at each end of the driveshaft. Remove the snap rings from the caps on the U-joints with a pair of snap ring pliers. Support one end of the driveshaft by placing a large socket underneath one of the U-joints. Make sure the socket rests on the lip of the driveshaft yoke but is large enough so that when the U-joint is driven through the yoke, it will not come into contact with the socket.

4. Place a punch or a ½-inch socket extension onto the U-joint cap opposite the socket in Step 3. Hold the punch or extension in place. Hit the top of the punch or extension with a hammer until the U-joint is driven from the yoke. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for the U-joint at the opposite end of the driveshaft. Discard the old U-joints.

5. Place a new U-joint into position in the yoke of the driveshaft. Tap it into place with a hammer until it is fully seated. Install new snap rings (included with the U-joints) into the grooves in the yoke over each U-joint cap with snap ring pliers. Repeat this step to install the U-joint at the opposite end of the driveshaft.

6.Alternate the U-joints in your rear wheel-drive Ford.A driveline U-joint is a Supple connector that attaches the tubular driveshaft to both the transmission and the rear axle on rear wheel-driven vehicles. The U-joint allows for the rotation of the driveshaft to competency the rear wheels, very as allowing for the up and down process of the rear axle when negotiating bumps.

Chrysler Van Problems

Everyone of the aforementioned non-engine-related problems requires replacement of the defective parts causing them. Failing blower motors would hurting for a fashionable resistor and wiring repair utensils. However, there is no known solution for doors that fail to lock or unlock both manually or electrically; and even the installation of a foam pad and strap kit may not be able to quell vehicle noise caused by fuel sloshing in the tank.

Fourth Generation (2001 to 2006)

First Generation (1990)

Some of the debut models of the Chrysler Town & Territory may suffer untimely wear of the seat girdle buckle meeting straps near the anchor position. Replacement straps with reinforcement places can be installed. Further, an anti-rotation tab can be removed to prevent band wear.

Some vehicles might acquire transmission failures and delicate liftgate hook assemblies. Pathetic gearboxes and latches can be replaced at the dealership.

Second Generation (1991 to 1995)

The second-generation of Chrysler vans has a host of vehicular issues. Manager among these incorporate the automatic transmission. Some of the problems with the gearbox involve Shivering during lustrous or convert acceleration over of a leaking front transmission pump, dangerous seals and flat startup due to pathetic valves. Although irregular automatic shifts are not transmission-related, the throttle position sensor might must to be replaced.

Other problems with second-generation Chrysler vans consist of failure of the air-conditioner (A/C) evaporator (the power-train state module may must to be reconfigured), engine sound due to fragility of the left-side Engine mount, and great oil consumption thanks to of sliding exhaust valve guides.

Third Generation (1996 to 2000)

Third-generation Chrysler Town & Society vehicles tend To possess the worst reliability records. The Manager crunch is engine-related: Rugged idling occurs in some vehicles due to loss of competency or broken pedestals in the cylinder heads. These problems can be resolved by disconnecting the knock sensor and replacing the pedestals, respectively. And, some engine tend to overheat; reprogramming the power-train containment module would conclusion it from doing so.

Other problems admit failing blower motors; activation of ABS brakes at exorbitantly low speeds due to defective wheel-speed sensors; malfunctioning dashboard lights now of a poor relay for the heated backlight; running radiator yet after the main is turned off, caused by overheating fan relays; and malfunctioning windscreen wipers.

The one Chrysler automobile in Industry, the Chrysler Town & Kingdom, was introduced in 1990 as a minivan. It has a sporadic nameplate variants, such as the Dodge Convoy, and the discontinued Plymouth Voyager and its sibling, the Chrysler Voyager. For most of its Industry jog, the Chrysler Town & Society has been beset by reliability issues.

The main problems with fourth generation Chrysler vans are steering-related. Shuddering or noises at low speeds may require fluid cooler, and in some cases, possibly a longer power-steering hose.

Other fourth-generation Town & Country van problems include A/C condenser leaks, requiring a deflector from road objects; coolant leaks due to damaged A/C and heater tubes; failure of the remote sensor, requiring hood switch replacement; suspension noise, which can be quelled with replacement of sway bar bushings and/or sway bar links; and water leaks from the A/C condensate drain hose onto the passenger side door (an O-ring can be installed at the drain outlet to stop the leak).

Fifth Generation (2007 to 2010)

Very few problems have been reported with the latest generation of the Chrysler Town & Country vehicles. Some vehicles may have aftermarket window glass installed from Hangzhou that tends to break into large pieces in the event of a crash. The supplier, Safelite, will replace the glass for free.
