Remove A Spring Door Hinge

A spring door hinge is naught akin a accepted door hinge. Regular hinges are removed by prying the hinge pin out first, and then just taking out the screws. A spring door hinge has no hinge pin, and the inside spring mechanism must first be dealt with before any of the mounting screws can be removed. Only after the spring mechanism is released can the hinge be unscrewed and removed safely from the door.

Remove the tension pin on by grasping it with a needle-nose pliers while holding the spring tension one-quarter turn clockwise as above.4. Allow the spring to slowly unwind after the pin has been pulled out.

Hex wrench types adjust on the top with a hex opening that the wrench is inserted into. Torsion levers with pins adjust with a side-mounted adjusting where the lever fits into.

2. Release the spring tension on the hinge. Insert either the hex wrench or torsion lever into the adjusting hole and turn it one-quarter turn in a clockwise direction. Hold it in this position.

Instructions

1. Determine which type of spring hinge you have mounted.

Hold the wrench or the lever and allow the spring mechanism to recoil in a clockwise direction. It will self-unwind, so merely guide it until all tension has been released.

5. Remove the screws from the door and the door jamb with your screwdriver, and pull the hinge off.
