The fuel pump on your 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee is bonded for attention a regular flow of fuel to the engine. Remove and replace In-Tank Fuel Pump on 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee
1. Drive your Jeep until the fuel gauge reads empty. It needs to be as close to completely empty as possible.
2. Grasp the fuel pump retaining nut with the channel lock pliers and turn it counter-clockwise to remove it. You may hear a click to signify that it has unlocked. The pump assembly will pop up about 1/8 of an inch once the locks disengage.
Remove the 4 to 6 bolts that secure the fuel tank protective skid plate cover, if so equipped, and set this part aside. These bolts are usually either 9/16 inch or 5/8 inch.
4. Place the jack under the middle of the tank with the piece of plywood on the jack pad. Raise the jack until the plywood just makes contact with the tank.
5. Remove the bolts that secure the tank mounting straps and remove the straps by turning them counterclockwise with the ratchet and socket. These bolts are usually either ½ or 9/16 inch.
6. Slowly lower the fuel tank until you have access to the fuel pump outlet and power wires.
7. Remove the power connector. This may have a locking tab that you need to squeeze to release the lock.
8. Remove the fuel outlet and return lines by squeezing the clamps with the pliers and sliding the clamps back 3 to 4 inches from the ends of the hoses. Remember which hose went to which connector.
9. Lower the jack the rest of the way carefully and pull the jack and tank out from under the rear of the vehicle.
10. Disconnect the fuel fill and overflow pipes by turning the worm screws on the clamps counterclockwise. Twist the end of the hoses back and forth until they come off the pipes into the tank.3.
11. Pull the pump assembly out of the tank opening and set it aside. Remove the old rubber seal and set it with the old pump.
12. Place the new rubber seal in the recess in the tank opening. Taking care to not bend or damage the fuel float arm, insert the new fuel pump into the tank opening. Use care to insert the new pump with the fuel and electrical connectors aligned the same way they came out on the old pump.
13. Install the fuel pump lock nut by placing it over the pump and turning it clockwise with the large pliers until all the locking tabs securely engage.
14. Roll the jack with the tank on top back under the rear of the Jeep and carefully lift it about 18 inches off the ground.
15. Reattach the fuel outlet and return lines. Grasp the squeeze clamps with the pliers and move the clamps to approximately on-half inch from the end of the hoses. Reattach the electrical connector, making sure you hear it click solidly.
16. Reinstall the tank mounting straps by inserting them into the corresponding openings in the frame or chassis and turning the strap nuts clockwise to tighten. Use the ratchet to tighten these bolts until the tank doesn't move when you shake it firmly.
17.Lift the skid plate into place if so equipped and install the bolts by turning them clockwise. Tighten them with the ratchet and socket to approximately 30 foot-pounds.
18. Lower the jack and pull it out from under the vehicle.
19. Reattach the fuel fill and overflow hoses to their pipes and slide the clamps over them and tighten them with the screwdriver by turning clockwise.
