Engine Preparation

Painting


9. Emulsion the sender units and other parts not removed with the grip colour, let them dry thoroughly then mask these items off. Emulsion the engine block the desired colour (Nigrescent, Lite Ford Dejected, Dark Corporate Blue). Let the block dry.


10. Place each component on a piece of cardboard or on a wire hook then paint it. Don't forget To cleanse, prep and paint the nuts and bolts. Use underhood black on the shock tower braces. Mask off then paint the brake master cylinder Cast Gray. Mask off the radiator, its support and the A/C condenser. Wipe the engine compartment with paint prep. Make sure all items are masked. Don't forget the brake lines. Paint the compartment firewall and sidewall with two coats of underhood black.


11. Clean, sand and prep the other components. Mask the engine off by wrapping it in painter's plastic. Expose just the radiator, radiator support and A/C condenser. Paint the radiator black and let it dry. Paint the master cylinder top Gold or Silver Cad. Paint the brake lines Detail Gray or Aluma Blast. The brake fittings are brass-colored as is the brake junction block.


12. Clean, sand and prep the air cleaner assembly and valve covers. Both of these are painted either gold or engine color depending on the year.


13. Clean, sand and prep the alternator, brackets, and other items then paint them. Prep the carburetor and paint it either silver or bronze.


14. Clean the exhaust manifolds with a wire brush then coat them with Factory Gray high heat manifold coating.


Reassembly


15. Unmask all components. Reinstall the exhaust manifolds with new gaskets. Correctly torque all bolts in sequence. Reinstall the carburetor and all brackets and linkages. Reinstall the alternator and A/C compressor. Install new belts. Tighten the belts to the correct tension. Clean the radiator and heater hoses with Gojo cleaner then reinstall them. Don't forget To cleanse and paint the clamps.


16. Reinstall the shock tower struts. Install all brake line clips after painting. Reinstall the starter solenoid and wiper washer reservoir and motor.


17.Reattach all electrical connections. Install wiring harness clips. Reinstall and reconnect the battery. Reinstall the valve covers. Reinstall the air cleaner assembly, distributor, spark plugs and wires.


18.19. Reinstall the hood, horns and grille. Replace all decals in their correct locations.


Check all bolts for correct torque. Take a small detail paintbrush and touch up any bolts or items scratched during reassembly. Spray some of the paint in a small cup to use with the detail brush.
