Repair a table corner chip with wood filler.
Wood filler, also called wood putty or wood epoxy, is used to repair wood cracks and chips. Wood filler is a two part solution that when mixed can be molded and sanded to take the shape of a missing piece of wood, such as a chip. Repairing a corner chip on a wood table is similar to repairing an edge chip, but because the chip is on a corner it will require support beneath the repair until the filler begins to solidify.
Instructions
1. Spray one flat 4-by-6 side on each piece of scrap wood with household lubricant. With the lubricant sprayed side facing up, arrange the wood beneath the damaged corner chip, so the wood protrudes and forms a flat surface beneath the chip location. The lubricant prevents the wood filler from adhering to the scrap wood. Clamp the wood to the table.
2. Scoop about a gumball- to a golf-ball-size ball of wood filler putty from the container with a putty knife. Put the filler into a plastic bowl.
3. Open the packaging of the hardener solution. Add the manufacturer's recommended amount of hardener to the wood filler putty in the plastic bowl. Wrap a piece of sandpaper around a wood dowel and use the edge to sand the wood filler repair until it is smooth to the touch. Remove the sanding residue with a rag.9. Paint the repaired section with acrylic paint.
Scoop the wood filler mixture with the end of your putty knife and apply it to the chip in the table's corner. Use the putty knife to smooth and shape the filler into the chip and form any part of the corner that may be missing. Don't attempt to make the repair perfect at this point.
5. Allow the filler to dry for about five minutes.
6. Use a utility knife to trim away the excess drying wood filler. The filler will become flexible, but firm. Some people use their fingers to shape the filler. You might want to wear gloves. Shape the filler as best as you can, but you will be sanding it smooth, so it still doesn't have to be perfect. Remove the clamps and scrap wood supports.
7. Allow the wood filler to dry for about 48 hours or according to the duration specified by the wood filler manufacturer's recommendations.
8. Use a file or microplane tool to sand the roughness from the dried wood filler repair. Mix it with a plastic knife. Most wood filler putties begin to harden in about five minutes. Without the hardener added, the wood filler putty will not solidify.4.
Polyester resin wood filler cannot be stained. Allow the paint to dry. Paint the repair with lacquer and allow the lacquer to dry.
