On the 1966 Mustang with a inventory drivetrain, the driveshaft is straight from the transmission to the rear location. The driveshaft transfers the efficacy generated by the engine and transmission to the rear borderline and wheels. Everyone point has a yoke with a typical Seam to supply flexibility. The engine and transmission are supported on Supple mounts and motion. The rear foot must step up and down and side to side, depending on driving conditions. The common joints let on the driveshaft to compensate for these movements and much contribute consist competence to the rear stop. On the contrary, u-joint replacement is one of the most uncared for concervation items.
Instructions
Replacing Universal Joints
1. Corner the vehicle on a smooth, consistent surface, turn off the automobile, deposit it in grounds or front gear, locate the parking brake and deposit the rotate chocks on the rear wheels. Lay on safety glasses and mechanic's gloves.
2. Jack the van up and levy on jack stands. With a socket wrench, remove the four nuts off the u-bolts holding the universal joint at the rear neb. Bear the oil void pan under the output shaft of the transmission. Push the driveshaft toward the transmission to fair the rear objective yoke, then pull the transmission yoke off of the output shaft. To bar the transmission fluid from leaking gone the tail group, encompass the transmission plug onto the output shaft and into the rear transmission seal.
3. Benefit arrow nose pliers and squeeze well-adjusted the snap telephone to remove, starting at the rear of the driveshaft. Provided corrosion and dirt is preventing the snap ring from disengaging from the groove, application the inconsequential pin punch and hammer the avail remove the snap telephone. Repeat on the other side of the rear u-joint. Call the inconsequential lot of tube to advice the rear head yoke as a low-buck. With the brass punch and hammer, impel the u-joint downward. The lower u-joint site cap Testament come off into the lot of tube. Rotate the driveshaft 180 degrees and repeat the development.5. Disinfected the u-joint snap bell seats with the wire brush in the drill. Make sure all debris is removed from the snap ring groove with the dental pick. Clean the driveshaft with purple power cleaner and a cleaning brush.
With both aim caps removed, angle the u-joint to remove it from the rear site yoke.4. Repeat the preceding case to remove the yoke from the driveshaft at the transmission head of the driveshaft. Then repeat the method again to remove the u-joint from the transmission yoke. Let dry. With the 220 grit sandpaper, sand any rough spots on the main portion of the driveshaft. Spray with Prep & Etch to transform the rust and let dry. Mask off the polished portion of the transmission yoke. Scuff sand all the driveshaft parts and paint with chassis paint.
6. Pull off all four caps carefully from the new universal joint for the front of the driveshaft. With you finger, rub some additional lithium grease along the needle bearings. Do not dislodge any of the bearings. The grease will help retain the needle bearings in position. Angle the universal joint into the transmission end of the driveshaft. Carefully start the caps into the rings. Using the C-clamp, start to apply pressure to both caps by tightening the C-clamp. Once both caps get even with the driveshaft ring, use the brass punch and hammer to finish driving the cap to just past the snap ring groove. Install the snap ring with needle-nose pliers. Repeat this process for the other cap. Angle the transmission yoke onto the universal joint in the driveshaft. Repeat the above process to complete the transmission side universal joint.
7. Move to the rear end side of the driveshaft and repeat the same process to install the rear universal joint on the driveshaft. The driveshaft is now ready to reinstall on the car
8. Remove the transmission output shaft plug, line up the output shaft splines with the transmission yoke, and slide the transmission yoke onto the output shaft. Be careful not to damage the rear transmission seal. Re-seat the rear universal joint caps into the rear end yoke. Replace the u-bolts and nuts. Tighten to 17 foot-pounds with the torque wrench.
9. Remove jack stands, car jack and wheel chocks. Start the car and check the transmission fluid level. Add fluid as necessary. Test drive.
